What do Christians believe about change and beginning again?
Christians believe that every person is loved by God, but that all of us are imperfect and capable of sin. Our mistakes and harmful choices can damage our relationship with God, hurt other people and take our lives in the wrong direction.
They believe that Jesus understands the human condition because he lived among us as a human being. He experienced temptation, grief, rejection and suffering. Christians believe that Jesus did not sin, but that he understands our weaknesses and responds to us with compassion.
Jesus does not expect us to become perfect before coming to him. He invites us to come as we are, be honest about our failures and receive the forgiveness he made possible through his death and resurrection.
Beginning again involves repentance: recognising what is wrong, turning towards God and choosing a new direction. This is not about remaining trapped in shame, but allowing Jesus to forgive us, restore us and help us live differently.
Christians believe that the Holy Spirit changes people gradually from within. He helps them leave harmful patterns behind, repair what can be repaired and grow in love, truth, patience and compassion.
Christians still make mistakes and sometimes return to old patterns. Following Jesus does not mean never failing. It means continuing to turn back to him, receiving forgiveness, learning from our mistakes and moving forward with his help.
Your weaknesses, failures and past mistakes do not place you beyond the love of Jesus. Christians believe that he knows you fully, welcomes you as you are and offers forgiveness and a new beginning.
He does not leave you to change alone. With the help of the Holy Spirit, you can grow gradually, make different choices and become more fully the person God created you to be.
