What draws me to Jesus?
You may know very little about Jesus. Perhaps you have only heard his name, seen him represented in churches or know that Christmas and Easter are connected with him. Curiosity is enough reason to begin finding out who he was and why he has mattered to so many people.
The accounts of Jesus describe someone who taught about God, welcomed people who were rejected or overlooked, healed the sick, forgave wrongdoing and challenged hypocrisy and injustice. He taught people to love God, love one another and even forgive their enemies.
As you learn about him, notice what stands out to you. You may be drawn to his compassion, courage, forgiveness or teaching. Some of his words may comfort you, while others may challenge the way you think or live.
Your understanding of Jesus may have been shaped by family, school, church, culture or other people’s opinions. Whether those experiences were positive, negative or almost absent, you can begin again by exploring what Jesus actually said and did, and considering for yourself who he might be.
Christians believe that a growing curiosity about Jesus may be the beginning of something deeper. They believe that the Holy Spirit can draw our attention towards him and help us recognise that Jesus is more than a teacher: he is God, inviting us into a relationship with him.
By learning what Jesus said and did, speaking honestly to him in prayer and beginning to put his teaching into practice, we can discover for ourselves what it means to follow him. Christians believe that this relationship brings forgiveness, new life, lasting change in the way we think, love and live, and the gift of eternal life with God.
