How do Christians believe we can know God?

Christians believe that God is personal and wants people to know him. Knowing God means more than believing that he exists or learning facts about him. It means entering into a relationship of love, trust and commitment.

They believe that God revealed himself most clearly through Jesus. In Jesus’ words, actions, compassion and forgiveness, Christians see God’s character and understand how he wants people to live.

Christians believe that Jesus makes a relationship with God possible. Through his death and resurrection, he offers forgiveness and overcomes the separation caused by human sin.

They believe that the Holy Spirit is God at work within those who follow Jesus. The Holy Spirit helps people trust God, understand their faith, pray and gradually become more like Christ.

A relationship with God grows through speaking honestly to him in prayer, reading the Bible, worshipping with other Christians and putting the teaching of Jesus into practice. Like any relationship, it develops through time, attention, trust and continued commitment.

Christians believe that you can know God personally by turning towards Jesus, accepting his forgiveness and placing your trust in him. You do not need complete understanding or perfect faith before taking that first step.

As you pray, learn about Jesus, share in the life of the Church and remain open to the Holy Spirit, Christians believe that your relationship with God can deepen and increasingly shape the way you think, love and live.
