What evidence is there that God can be known personally?

Christians look first to Jesus. They believe that God came to earth in him, making himself known through Jesus’ life, teaching, miracles, death and resurrection.

The earliest Christians said that they encountered Jesus alive after his crucifixion and experienced the presence of the Holy Spirit. These experiences convinced them that God was real, personal and present in their lives.

Christians throughout history have described similar experiences: a sense of God’s presence, guidance and answered prayer, forgiveness, inner change, and love, joy and strength received through the Holy Spirit.

Christians believe that God can be known personally because he revealed himself through Jesus. In Jesus’ words, actions, and way of life, they see God’s character, purposes and teaching. They believe that Jesus’ resurrection confirmed who he was and gave them confidence that what he taught about God was true.

They also point to their own experience of the Holy Spirit. Christians believe that through prayer and faith in Jesus, people can experience God’s presence, receive his guidance and grow in a real relationship with him.
