The woman at the well finds what she was searching for

A Samaritan woman came to a well to collect water and found Jesus resting there. Jews and Samaritans usually kept apart, yet Jesus spoke to her with respect and asked her for a drink.

As they talked, Jesus showed that he already knew the difficult and complicated parts of her life. He understood her without rejecting or humiliating her.

Jesus told her that ordinary water would satisfy thirst only for a time, but that he could give “living water”: a new life with God that would reach the deepest needs within her.

The woman began to realise that Jesus might be the person she and her people had been waiting for. She left her water jar behind, returned to her town and told others about him. Her ordinary day had become the beginning of a new direction and purpose.

Christians believe that this story shows how Jesus meets people within their real lives, knows them fully and still offers them love, dignity and a relationship with God.

They believe that our deepest search for meaning is ultimately a search for God. Knowing Jesus can give our lives a new direction, transform what we value and give us a hope and purpose that we can share with others.
