Try a simple prayer of openness

Find somewhere quiet where you are unlikely to be interrupted. You might sit indoors, walk outside or spend a few minutes somewhere that helps you slow down and relax.

Whenever you are ready, speak honestly to God, even if you are uncertain whether he is there or what you might say. You could say:

“God, if you are there, help me become aware of you. Show me what is true, and guide me towards you.”

Or you might simply want to tell him about your day or how you are feeling.

Do not try to force a feeling or expect something dramatic. Simply notice any thoughts, memories, questions, peace or desire to continue searching.

Take as much or as little time as you like. You may want to stay for just a few seconds or much longer.

You can repeat this practice as often as you like, whenever you like.

Christians believe that God can make himself known through creation, prayer and the quiet work of the Holy Spirit. Becoming still and speaking honestly to him can be a simple first step towards recognising his presence.

You may not experience anything immediate or unusual. The purpose is simply to become open, attentive and willing to continue exploring.
