Moses and the burning bush
Moses was looking after sheep in the wilderness when he noticed something unusual. A bush was burning, but the flames were not destroying it.
When Moses went closer, God called him by name and told him that he was standing on holy ground. An ordinary place had become the place of an encounter with God.
God told Moses that he had seen the suffering of the Israelite people in Egypt. He was calling Moses to return there and help lead them out of slavery.
Moses felt inadequate and afraid. He asked why he should be the person chosen for such a task. God did not tell Moses that he was already strong enough. He simply promised: “I will be with you.”
Christians believe that this story shows the spiritual and physical worlds meeting within ordinary life. God saw human suffering, made himself known to Moses and called him to take part in what God was doing.
Christians do not expect everyone to encounter a burning bush, but they believe that God can still make himself known through prayer, the Bible, wonder, conscience and the Holy Spirit. Ordinary moments can become the beginning of a life with God.
