How can we make sense of spirituality, religion, faith and belief?

Words such as spirituality, religion, faith and belief are often used as though they mean the same thing. Yet they can describe different ways of understanding reality, meaning and how life should be lived.

Some people understand themselves as both spiritual and religious, exploring faith within an established tradition. Others believe in a spiritual reality but do not identify with a particular religion. Some remain unsure whether anything spiritual exists, while others are convinced that reality is entirely physical and that no spiritual dimension exists.

Different religions and worldviews often ask similar questions, but they do not always give the same answers. With so many perspectives, it can help to have a clear map of the main options, the ways in which they agree and disagree, and the different paths available for exploring them.

How can I make sense of the different spiritual, religious and non-religious worldviews, and find a clear path through them?
