Questions about Christianity
Choose any question that interests you. These brief answers explain the Christian perspective without assuming that you already believe it.
Christianity
What is Christianity really about?
Christianity is centred on Jesus. Christians believe that God came to live among us through Jesus so that we could know what God is like and be brought into a restored relationship with him.
They believe that Jesus died for our sins, rose from the dead and offers forgiveness, new life and eternal life to everyone who places their trust in him.
What does Christianity offer?
Christianity offers the possibility of knowing God, receiving forgiveness and beginning again. Christians believe that the Holy Spirit helps them grow in faith, become more like Jesus and live with greater love, hope and purpose.
Christianity does not promise an easy life. It offers God’s presence through both joy and suffering, a community of faith and the hope of eternal life with God.
Is Christianity mainly about rules and being a good person?
No. Christians believe that no one earns salvation by living a perfect life or doing enough good things. Salvation is a gift of God’s grace.
Through Jesus, God offers forgiveness, a restored relationship with him and eternal life—not because we have earned them, but because he loves us and is merciful towards us.
Christians still seek to do what is good, but their actions are a response to God’s love rather than the price of receiving it. They try to live differently because they have been forgiven, not in order to earn forgiveness.
Jesus
Who was Jesus?
Jesus was a Jewish teacher who lived in the first century. He taught about God, welcomed people who were often rejected, healed the sick and called people to love God and one another.
Christians believe that Jesus was more than a teacher or prophet. They believe that he is God, who came to live among us as a human being.
Why do Christians believe that Jesus is God?
Jesus spoke and acted with an authority that Christians believe belongs to God. He forgave sins, described a unique relationship with God the Father and invited people to place their trust in him.
Christians believe that his resurrection confirmed his identity. His earliest followers came to worship him as Lord and God and continued proclaiming this despite the risk of persecution and death.
Why did Jesus die?
Jesus was executed by crucifixion under Roman authority. Christians believe that his death was also a willing act of love through which he took upon himself the consequences of human sin.
They believe that Jesus died so that we could be forgiven, reconciled to God and freed to begin a new life with him.
Did Jesus really rise from the dead?
Christians believe that Jesus physically rose from the dead. The New Testament records that his tomb was found empty and that individuals and groups of his followers believed they had encountered him alive afterwards.
The resurrection transformed frightened disciples into people who publicly proclaimed that Jesus was alive. It is the central claim of Christianity and the foundation of Christian hope.
Beginning the Christian faith
Can God really forgive me?
Christians believe that no one is beyond God’s mercy. Jesus came for people who know that they need forgiveness, not for people who believe they have never done anything wrong.
We can come to God honestly, admit what we have done and ask for forgiveness. Through Jesus, God offers forgiveness and a genuine new beginning.
Do I need to become a better person before approaching God?
No. Christianity teaches that we come to God as we are. Jesus welcomed people before their lives were fully changed and then helped them begin living differently.
Christians believe that God’s love and forgiveness are gifts, not rewards for becoming good enough. Change follows as we learn to trust Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to work within us.
How do I become a Christian?
Becoming a Christian means turning towards God, trusting Jesus, receiving his forgiveness and choosing to follow him. Faith is more than agreeing that Jesus existed; it is placing your trust in him.
You can begin by speaking honestly to God, asking for forgiveness and telling Jesus that you want to trust and follow him. Prayer, reading about Jesus and becoming part of a church can then help that relationship grow.
How do I pray?
Prayer is speaking and listening to God. You do not need special words or a particular feeling. You can tell God what you are grateful for, what worries you, where you need help and what you do not understand.
Begin honestly and simply. Christians believe that God listens, that Jesus brings us into relationship with him and that the Holy Spirit helps us pray.
Why do Christians go to church?
Christians gather to worship God, pray, learn from the Bible, receive encouragement and support one another. Church also gives people opportunities to serve others and grow in faith together.
Churches are made up of imperfect people and no church gets everything right. Christians nevertheless believe that faith is meant to be lived with others rather than entirely alone.
Honest and difficult questions
Does God exist?
Christians believe that God is the source of the universe and of all life. They see signs of him in the existence and order of the universe, human consciousness, moral awareness, beauty, love and spiritual experience.
They believe that God has made himself known most clearly through Jesus. These things do not provide a simple mathematical proof, but Christians believe they form a reasonable basis for faith.
Why does God allow suffering?
Christianity does not give one simple explanation for every instance of suffering. Some suffering results from human choices, some from living in a fragile natural world, and some remains difficult to understand.
Christians believe that God does not remain distant from suffering. Through Jesus, he entered human pain himself. They also believe that God can bring good from suffering and will ultimately overcome evil, suffering and death.
Are faith, evidence and science opposed to one another?
No. Science investigates the physical world and helps us understand how it works. Christianity addresses wider questions about why anything exists, whether life has meaning and whether God has made himself known.
Christian faith is not meant to be belief without thought or evidence. It involves trusting God on the basis of reasons, experience and the testimony about Jesus.
Why believe Christianity rather than another religion?
Religions share some values and questions, but they do not all make the same claims about God, humanity or salvation. Christianity stands or falls particularly on the identity, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Christians believe that Jesus uniquely reveals God and opens the way to a restored relationship with him. A fair investigation should therefore look closely at Jesus and ask whether the Christian claims about him are true.
What if I have doubts?
Doubt does not prevent you from exploring Christianity or approaching God. People in the Bible often had questions, uncertainty and difficulty trusting what they had heard.
Faith does not require pretending that every question has been answered. You can examine your doubts honestly, seek reliable answers and speak openly to God about your uncertainty.
What about the harm caused by Christians and churches?
Christians and churches have sometimes caused serious harm, abused power or failed to protect people. These wrongs should be acknowledged honestly rather than excused or hidden.
Such behaviour contradicts the teaching and character of Jesus. Christians are called to repent, seek justice, protect those who are vulnerable and learn from those who have been harmed. The failures of Christians may make trust difficult, but they do not define Jesus himself.
